Millward were appointed by the UK’s leading developer of gasification technology for Energy from Waste (EfW), Chinook Urban Mining Ltd as civil and structural engineers to provide designs for the new Energy from Waste plant located at the Dagenham Dock, East London.
We undertook several services for the project from SI, desk top study through to foundations and external works on site.

Acting as the design coordinators on the project, Millward are responsible for ensuring all elements, including engineering, architectural and M&E services, are delivered to the scheduled programme.

Added Value

This project was truly collaborative. From the project’s inception, we took responsibility for procuring and managing the scheme’s project management, architecture and very complex M&E. Throughout the project, we facilitated design workshops to ensure the smooth running of the project and acted as the interface between the plant designer and contractor throughout construction. During the scheme, we also had to liaise with HS1 and National Grid when overcoming site challenges. Because we were so involved in the project from its inception, we became critical to the preparation of a tender list and subsequent interviews.

Once complete, the EfW facility will generate enough energy to power over 35,000 homes, reducing the amount of landfill waste by up to 180,000 tonnes per year. It will also generate over 20MWs of low carbon renewable electricity. This flagship build is designed to extract the potential energy from MSW and C&I waste to create electricity. Using the process of gasification and pyrolysis, the facility will use the most efficient and environmentally friendly and technologically advanced means of EfW generation.
