Bourne and Spalding Academy
This project involved providing full structural engineering design services for two school extensions within the South Lincolnshire Academies Trust, located in Bourne and Spalding, South Lincolnshire. Our role covered the assessment of existing structures, development of appropriate structural solutions, and continued technical support throughout the construction phase to ensure the successful delivery of both extensions.
We undertook the structural engineering design for extensions at two schools within the South Lincolnshire Academies Trust. With no as-built information available for either site, we carried out detailed site visits to establish as much as possible about the existing structures. Our team designed the full structural systems for both projects, including steel framing, load-bearing masonry (at Spalding only), timber rafters, ground-bearing floor slabs and foundations. At Bourne Academy, extensive glazing in the extension meant there were no suitable locations for conventional bracing or shear walls, so we developed a stability strategy using two-way moment frames, incorporating exposed CHS columns internally for aesthetic impact. At Spalding Academy, tight site constraints and existing buildings on two sides required foundation designs to be carefully reviewed during construction, particularly once trial pits exposed the adjacent existing foundations. Throughout the construction phase, we also provided ongoing support, attending site on multiple occasions to advise on additional works carried out concurrently, such as the localised removal of load-bearing walls.
Added Value
Both projects had to be constructed with very tight timeframes, to work around the school holidays and minimise disruption to the school. We were unable to carry out many intrusive investigations during the design phase, to avoid disruption to the school, and there was also no record / as built information available. This meant that there were some unexpected challenges during construction. We were proactive with attending site at short notice, to review and assess with the contractor. We were then able to provide recommendations / remediation details quickly, in order to keep the project moving.
