Rushcliffe Arena Civil Centre

This high-profile project is the build of a new leisure centre in the heart of Nottingham town, West Bridgford. The facility, which is run by a private leisure company, boasts state of the art facilities and amenities to improve the area’s leisure provision. Facilities include a 25m pool and beach-themed fun pool, gym and several fitness studios, bowls rink, sports hall and squash courts.

In addition to the facilities, the building includes a café open to visitors and the public and is also home to 2,000sm of Rushcliffe Borough Council’s offices.

We were appointed by Project Manager Turner and Townsend and also worked alongside architect CPMG. The project was a finalist in the 2017 East Midlands Celebrating Construction Awards – Project of the Year – Building Projects.

Added Value

Throughout the project, we engineered many designs or provided numerous solutions including interrogating Rushcliffe Borough Council’s archive to gain a clear understanding of the existing structure. This enabled them to retain the existing sports hall and bowls hall – a massive cost saving.

The project also bought numerous challenges, these included:

  • The site’s swimming pool was constructed over an old landfill site so we had to find a design solution was meant gases continue to ventilate. The solution was the build the swimming pool’s unusual shape into a concrete box (along with all relevant services)
  • We had to work inline with the site’s geoenvironmental findings – as the site was an old landfill site and develop our solutions accordingly
