Rykneld Road, Burton Upon Trent
Rykneld Road features 304 new homes in addition to 5 large apartment blocks just inside Derby City’s boundary.
We provided both civil and structural solutions for the scheme with the civils team developing over 1.5 kilometres of Highway adhering to the standards and specifications of Derby City Highways as well as delivering comprehensive drainage designs, calculations, and specifications for acceptance by the local water authority. We also produced detailed designs for the external elevations and private drainage systems spanning the entire site. Structural services included facilitating the substructure design for various housetypes and apartments across the site. The structural design considered the impact of existing and proposed trees/hedgerows, changes in level following the design undertaken by the civils team.
Added Value
Planning permission stipulated that the surface water drainage for properties accessed from shared private drives must be drained using permeable block paving. This construction method is more costly compared to traditional bituminous surfacing and drainage via gullies. To mitigate these additional expenses for the client, we developed alternative engineering solutions and proposals to minimise stone and construction costs while still complying with the planning requirements.
Structurally, the plots were delivered in a period of 8 weeks. The housetypes varied between detached houses, semi-detached houses, terraced housing and 3-storey apartments with approximately 27 piled plots due to the influence of vegetation. To achieve the tight deadlines Millward offered to do a staged delivery, splitting the site into workable phases which facilitated the civil design before feeding into the substructure design/ scheduling and allowed the structural engineers and technicians to seamlessly work simultaneously.
